Adopting vacant homes

The June 17th Star Tribune had an article on how Richfield is encouraging residents to adopt neighboring vacant homes, mowing lawns, picking up trash, etc.  This is a good idea, and I suspect there are people in Bloomington doing the same thing.  I'd be interested in hearing if you know of someone doing this.

Nine Mile Creek Senior Living groundbreaking

The developers of the Nine Mile Creek Senior Living building have announced their groundbreaking on Tuesday, June 23.  This building will complete the redevelopment of the old City Hall site at Penn Avenue and Old Shakopee Rd.  I'm not able to find a web site for the project yet;  the Planning Staff Report has some details on the project.

New LRT station construction expected to start in summer 2009

Starting this summer, the Metro Council will be constructing a new LRT station in Bloomington at American Boulevard.  This station was originally planned as part of the LRT line, but was cut due to cost considerations back in 2003.  The city has worked closely with the Metro Council to get this station added to the line.

Pond water levels low

You may have noticed that pond and lake water levels around Bloomington are lower than normal this spring.  Water levels are strongly related to rainfall.  I wasn't aware this week that we're actually in a moderate drought.  You can see the current drought status at the US Drought Monitor.

Nine Mile Creek bridge closing this summer

Starting in early June, the Nine Mile Creek bridge on 106th Street will be closed for renovation.  Maintenance to the bridge will include repair of the bridge surface and replacement of the bearings that connect the bridge to the piers on either end.

To coincide with school schedules, the project is planned to start on June 10 and is expected to be finished on or before September 4.

The pedestrian bridge and parking lot will both remain open during most of the project, except during times when safety requires it to be closed.
